Two Gut Healing Additions to Start Today!

As we discuss quite often, gut health is crucial to brain health.

The connection between the gut and the brain is a sensitive balance of interdependence. Healthy brain function is dependent on the neurotransmitters and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced in the GI tract.

If there is inflammation and imbalance in the gut, it will contribute to digestion problems, anxiety, aggression, mood swings, lack of focus and attention and interrupted sleep.

However, there are some easy additions you can do daily to start healing the gut now!

Two very healing substances to the gut barrier and brain health are collagen and healthy fats.

Bone Broth is a very healing broth that contains collagen, amino acids and trace minerals that are essential to health and well-being. Bone broth can be enjoyed on its own or added to soups, and sauces (spaghetti sauces or others). See a simple recipe below or you can buy some already prepared at any supermarket.

Healthy fats are also essential for healing the gut barrier and reducing inflammation. You can drizzle olive oil or avocado oil over spaghetti or your child’s favorite dish. A little can even be mixed with ketchup if your child only eats chicken nuggets and french fries at this point. Both have a very mild flavor and usually go unrecognized. Coconut oil can be spread on toast prior to peanut butter or other favorite topping.

Bone Broth

2-4 lbs beef or chicken bones

1 gallon water

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Sea salt and herbs such as rosemary or oregano for taste

Directions:

  • Add bones to a heavy stock pot. And then pour in water and vinegar

  • Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat, and then immediately turn the heat down to medium-low. Simmer, uncovered, at least 8 hours and up to 12 hours. About a half hour before the broth is finished, add sea salt and herbs you may be using.

  • Strain the broth. Serve immediately, or pour it into jars and store it in the fridge for up to 5 days and in the freezer for up to 6 months.
