Proven Tips to Holistic Approach to Seasonal Allergies
Trees are starting to bloom! As beautiful as it is, this can lead to seasonal allergies for many. Seasonal allergies can be downright dreadful and when your child is suffering from them it can be heartbreaking. Many children with autism and ADHD suffer from multiple allergies including all things seasonal. Some of the over-the-counter medications can have side effects that are equally as bad, especially for sensitive kiddos. Below are some tips that are very beneficial in helping reduce seasonal allergies.
Proven tips to Reduce Seasonal Allergies
The BEST supplements
Quercetin with Vitamin C—Quercetin prevents immune cells from releasing histamines which are the chemicals in the body that cause the allergic reaction. Quercetin helps reduce symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose, swelling of the face and lips, and even hives. Probiotics also are helpful because gut health is strongly linked to seasonal and food allergies. Probiotics have been shown to effectively reduce seasonal allergies. My favorite probiotic can also be found in my Fullscript protocol for Seasonal Allergies here.
Reduce Dairy Intake
One of the biggest reasons that dairy products worsen seasonal allergy symptoms is that dairy contains arachidonic acids. These acids increase the production of leukotrienes which restrict the bronchial tubes, making it difficult for air to get through. In turn, this can bring on the production of phlegm and mucus, which can worsen the symptoms of allergies.
Drink more water
At least 1/2 the body weight in ounces is a general guideline. For instance, a 50 lb child would need 25 ounces of water daily
Increase plant intake
Smoothies or this homemade applesauce are a great way to do this!
Berries are also a great addition that many kids will eat
Limit added sugar to 24 g or less daily
Spikes in blood sugar are stressful to your body and can severely impact your immune system's ability to fight off allergens appropriately.
Reduce indoor pollen intake
Leave shoes at the door
shoes pick up mold, dirt, pollen, and everything else—best to leave them at the door when going inside your home
Wipe down pets and their paws
Use an indoor air purifier that reduces dust mites and pollen
Start early and be prepared for Spring!
